More Web 2.0 Exit Strategy Badges

Marco Rosella recently ran a post on Web 2.0 exit strategy badges and prepping for the upcoming Web 2.0 Conference in San Francisco. I also covered it and offered a few more suggestions.

Well, the creativity never stops I guess, so I'm publishing a few more ideas to complement Marco's initial line-up of exit badges.

I still say that we should get some of these made and pass them around at all of the events. In fact, let's get these designs placed up on Zazzle and let people create shirts and other cool schwag.

Shutterfly Hits the Street with IPO - Web 1.0 Still Has Legs

Online photo sharing and printing service Shutterfly raised $87 million in an IPO today, closing up 3.7% at $15.55 per share, reaching a ceiling of $16.73, according to VentureBeat.

Marshall Kirkpatrick of TechCrunch observed, "In a time when IPOs are among the least common liquidity events enjoyed by Web 2.0 startups, for a photosharing site to remain independent and go public is interesting relative to all the startups we profile here."

I personally find this interesting on many levels. Just for some quick background...I led several launch teams for consumer-focused digital photography products and services, with some of the first "tethered" still cameras dating back to '91. I intro'd one of the first commercially accepted cameras, the
Ricoh RDC2, back in the 90s (which I still have to this day!), along with cameras by Kodak, Minolta, Pentax, SiPix, DXG, and UMAX, etc., etc. I also launched ClubPhoto.com which paved the way for a ton of online photo sharing sites along with the ever-popular Smugmug.

I think this is one of the true first concrete signs that the internet economy is coming back around andI'm crossing my fingers that everything stays in perspective. Experts are using numbers to prove that we’re not in Bubble 2.0, but the hype is reminiscent of the first one. I mean at the end of the day, this isn't even the best site for sharing memories any longer. In fact, if I remember correctly, Shutterfly took in ridiculous sums of money in a never-ending series of financing.

In the face of social media, a new landscape of mashed-up competitors, and a more web-savvy consumer market, I wonder how they’ll use this money to remain relevant over the next critical 2-3 years.

Web 2.0 Exit Strategy Badges

Kudos over to Marco Rosella for his clever post on Web 2.0 exit strategy badges and prepping for the upcoming Web 2.0 Conference in San Francisco. Thanks for the tip from Valleywag.

He writes, "With the definitive affirmation of blogs, podcasts, wikis, video and photo sharing, social bookmarking and all the other instruments that value the single user as an ‘active’ part of the web, the continual creation-sharing-reuse of contents ride with a rhythm high as the growth of the number of services that support it."

If participation is king, then where does that leave cash? Truthfully, fresh from DEMOfall, and after attending several "web 2.0" events, it's clear that most new startups could simply be extensions or add-ons to more well-established companies.

I caught up with
GigaOm's Liz Gannes and she seemed to leave with the same impression in her post More DEMO Post-Game: Monster Mash, "People, these are extensions, not companies!"

Level 1

Level 2

Level 3

Level 4

Of course, I had to create a couple of my own! Let's get some of these made and pass them around at all of the events. In fact, let's get these designs placed up on
Zazzle and let people create shirts and other goodies.

DEMOfall 2006 - That's a Wrap

DEMOfall 06 is behind us and DEMO’07 (ha, 007) is just around the corner. I know of two companies already hoping to launch their new products at that event.

Kickoff
pictures
Day One pictures
Day Two pictures

There was a last-minute addition to the line-up, which I didn’t cover in my last post.
Mercora presented to Chris Shipley last week, and she just had to have them close out the event.

Live from DEMOfall 9/27/06

It was an interesting demo to say the least. In fact, they simply streamed high fidelity audio to 3G enabled phones. They opened their presentation with a series of apologies, the first of which, was an apology to Apple’s Steve Jobs for beating them to the iPhone. Classic.

Live from DEMOfall 9/27/06

As the music played, they danced on stage and asked the audience to participate. Some actually did.

Live from DEMOfall 9/27/06

Good job guys, especially for coming in at the last minute.

Back to the DEMO wrap...

In summary, there were some truly incredible presentations and a few that were, let’s just say, less than impressive. There’s so much to take in, that it’s difficult to provide my perspective on each of the 67 companies initially. Overall though, it was an effective fusion of web dot oh applications, social networks and tools, along with gadgets, and innovative technology, that, in their own way, will appeal to enterprise customers, small businesses, mobile professionals, and consumers. Some will succeed. Some will get acquired. Others will fade-away, but will most likely set the stage for focused evolution.

By the end of it all, everyone seemed much more relaxed. I think that every presenter was just fundamentally relieved that their 6 minutes was behind them. Now it was up to them to extend the next 15 minutes of fame that DEMOfall had bestowed upon each company. No easy task indeed.

Over the next few months, I will be taking a more in depth look at several companies for review here. I believe most on this short list have a legitimate shot at something big - it's now all about execution.

Memorable moments:
Was Bono at DEMO?

I called out Paul, instead of Bono, and nothing. I walked up to him and it was darn close. Chatted with him for a few, and it was obvious by his voice...but, all I can say is, that it's gotta be good to be him.

Natiali Del Conte of
PC Magazine covered Bono's appearance. Jim Louderback wrote about it here. Daniel Terdiman of CNET also wrote about it.

Live from DEMOfall Day Two 9/27/06

Day two of DEMO was in full effect, and I was running as fast as I could to keep up. Imagine a ballroom and pavilion full of mouth-watering technology and gadgets, top tier media and bloggers, overactive buzz word factories, and an elite crowd of nervous and excited presenters.

Photo Credit: Rob Lee, the man who makes everything happen

67 presenters and only 6 minutes to show the world how they will change it.

A few friends have helped me along the way here in San Diego. I wanted to say thank you specifically to Marshall Kirkpatrick of TechCrunch, Vic Podcaster of
HotfromSiliconValley.com, and Greg Narain of Social Roots and Social Twister.

So let's get to it...

As Chris Shipley took the stage this morning, she reminded us that the technology presented today was not only highlighting what’s possible, but was also setting the stage for the future.

Making the Internet Safe for Humanity

Chris Shipley, “It’s a wild and dangerous world out there, and despite the common-sense steps we take to protect ourselves, the bad guys always seem to be just one step ahead. Thank goodness for these super heroes, who are each, in their own way, bringing order and justice to our online experience.”

Welcome and opening remarks by Chris Shipley, Executive Produce, DEMO Conferences

Live from DEMOfall 2006 9/26/06

It’s time for a Ballroom Blitz as the music blared and the lights dimmed. In a dramatic fashion, images from previous events cycled through on the two gigantic screens on either side of the stage, leading up to Chris Shipley’s arrival.

Her presence, as always is nothing less than impressive.
Live from DEMOfall 2006 9/26/06

Her opening remarks were focused and poignant, claiming that this DEMO would be controversial and would introduce new technologies for the home, the mobile professional and the enterprise.

The stage presentations, she said, would offer a map from today to the future.

In an interesting, but relevant, detour, she questioned whether or not we are in another bubble. A topic, more than well covered here.

“If we are referring to a bubble weighed by the inflation of economic values, the numbers don’t support it,” said Shipley. She continued, “Current investments are only about 1/3 of what they where in the 90s.”

She then hit on a salient point, “Entrepreneurs, these days, are doing more with less. Instead of seeking investments, they’re supporting and building the technology, infrastructure and sales and in turn are rationalizing valuations.”

Shipley likened Silicon Valley to an echo chamber that stirs excitement and generates tremendous noise, which could distract companies and send them off track if they don’t focus. In a jab to the frenzy many startups create pursuing coverage on certain high-traffic blogs, she stated, “they can make so much noise in a small community, but have such little impact in the long term.”

Technology, in a positive assessment, is being driven by the “user-in” rather than “engineering out.” These products as she said, “can stand on the shoulders of giants and are the foundation for the next generation of products and business. These 67 companies can stand on their own.”

Life Just Got Simpler

Chris Shipley, “Just six months ago, I told those assembled at DEMO 2006 that hardware and software products just had to get easier to use. Otherwise, the market would face a backlash from individuals and businesses who were tires of wrestling with technology in order to make it work. It appears the message was received.”
